# Managing branches

Branches allow multiple streams of policy updates to occur in parallel without interference.

A branch is an independent line of policy development. You begin this development by creating a top-level branch for your main development line or a specific environment, like QA or production. For specific tasks, such as developing a new feature, create subbranches from a specific point (commit) in an existing branch.
