# Typical configuration management workflow (early access)

A typical configuration management and promotion workflow in PingOne is illustrated in the following diagram:

The diagram illustrates the following steps:

1. **Develop**: Configure the resources in the development environment.

2. **Promote**: When the configuration is set, [define promotion variables](ea-p1_create_promotion_variable.html) for environment-specific settings and [promote the changes](ea-p1_configure_promotion.html) to your test environment.

3. **Test**: Test the configuration in your testing environment.

4. **Promote**: When testing is complete, define promotion variables in the test environment and promote the changes to the production environment.

5. **Validate**: Validate the configuration changes in your production environment.

6. **Deploy**: Make the changes available to your end users.

7. **Repeat**: Repeat the process whenever new configuration resources are created or when changes are made to existing resources.
