# Certificates and key pairs

In PingOne, certificates and key pairs work together to protect data, verify identities, and ensure trustworthy communication between services. When you create a new environment, PingOne automatically generates two default key pairs, one for signing and one for encryption. These keys, along with their associated certificates, form the foundation of secure operations within your environment.

The following topics can help you understand how to view, create, and use certificates and key pairs to maintain strong security, support integrations, and uphold compliance.
